  • TOA#oFOSC began as a topic on Twitter.

One recent afternoon, world-class tweeter @bruisinales mused that she was in desperate need of the elixir of life, French Onion Soup. She let it be known later that she had procured her FOS from a local fern bar which shall go nameless (Tripps). Asheville twitterati, appalled by her selection, began tweettacking with their favorite restaurants featuring FOS. Among them were Bouchon (bien sur), Fiore’s, and Burgermeisters, tweeters themselves.

Several days of major smack-tweeting about the best FOS ensued. A summit was called and from it emerged the Executive Committee and a Head Judge of TOA#oFOSC. @bruisinales aka Julie, (pictured at right) was named Head Judge of the contest, with the remaining five restaurant owners, @blueh2oseafood, @Burgermeisters, @LuellasBBQ, @SazeracAVL and bien sur, @bouchonasheville (all women, btw) became the Executive Committee—in charge of the competition.

The date was set for April 1 and Michel graciously offered to host the contest.

A midafternoon time was chosen to accomodate working chefs. Three members of the five-member judging panel will be chosen from tweeters who a) are interested b) are available c) tweeted why they should be chosen d) offered meaningful bribes to the Executive Committee. Head Judge @bruisinales and 1st Runnerup Judge @Foodtopia complete the panel.

Chantal Sanders, who tweets as @Burgermeisters, organizational and artistic genius, created what are destined to become the most coveted awards in the biz—First, Second & Third place medals bestowed upon the winners.

Worldwide announcement of the winners was made via telephone call to 880therevolution top talk show “The Local Edge with Blake and Lesley” (weekday afternoons 3-6 pm, 880 AM) where an important interview was interrupted to accommodate the breaking news. Coincidentally, Radio Star Lesley is co-owner of Sazerac! An amazing coincidence, but typical of the synthesis that is Asheville, NC.

The weather, the soup, the joie de vivre made for a fine spring afternoon in downtown Asheville.
